PREVENTING HEART DISEASE: CORONARY HEART DISEASE (CHD)
Some people are born with heart disease. They may have a heart chamber missing or malformed, a valve between the chambers of the heart not opening or closing adequately, or a weak heart that is unable to pump with enough power to expel sufficient amounts of blood throughout the body. Others may have blood vessels that do not work normally because they are malformed. And still others may have heart disease because they have had rheumatic fever (which affects the heart valves), or they may experience an irregular heartbeat known as an arrythmia.
The most prevalent form of heart disease, however, is CHD. The coronary arteries can become occluded when blood fats and other substances collect on their inside walls, thereby narrowing the opening through which blood can flow (see Figure 12.1). This collection of blood fats and other substances can also break loose and travel through the arteries until they get caught and block the flow of blood at that point. That is called a thrombosis. The clogging material is called plaque, and the condition is known as atherosclerosis. Plaque consists of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and the clotting material fibrin. If blood flow is restricted, individuals can become fatigued easily and may feel angina pectoris when they are active. If the coronary arteries are so narrowed or blocked that little, if any, blood can pass through, the part of the heart deprived of oxygenated blood can die. And if that part is important or involves a large enough section of the heart, the person to whom this happens can die.
