UNDERWEIGHT CONDITIONS AND EATING DISORDERS: EATING DISORDERS - BULIMIA
Bulimia More common than anorexia nervosa, bulimia occurs in males as well as females, and afflicts an estimated 10 to 20 percent of all college students. Only 5 percent of these students meet the criteria for anorexia nervosa, and less than 1 percent are actively anorexic. The typical profile of bulimia victims is similar to those suffering from anorexia nervosa, although they tend to be slightly older and healthier, malnourished but closer to normal weight. The bulimic binge is generally not a response to hunger, and the food is not consumed for nutritional value. As the binge-vomit cycle is repeated, medical problems grow. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance may lead to abnormal heart rhythm and kidney damage. Infections of the bladder and kidneys may cause kidney failure. Vomiting results in irritation and infection of the pharynx, esophagus, and salivary glands; erosion of the teeth; and dental caries. In some cases, the esophagus or the stomach may rupture.
Bulimic patients are more cooperative and somewhat easier to treat than anorexic patients since they seem to recognize that the behavior is abnormal. Most treatment programs attempt to help people gain control over their binge eating and encourage a minimum of 1,500 calories daily. Lithium and other drugs have been shown to reduce the incidence of bulimic episodes by 75 to 100 percent. Most patients can also be helped by antidepressant medication.
