UNDERWEIGHT CONDITIONS AND EATING DISORDERS: EATING DISORDERS
The current overemphasis on flat stomachs, lean thighs, firm buttocks, and slimness is at least partially responsible for aggravating two serious eating disorders that can lead to death: anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Both disorders are known only in developed nations and are most common in higher economic groups.
Anorexia The number of cases of anorexia nervosa is increasing and now occurs in almost 1 of every 100 people, 19 out of 20 of whom are young women. The disease is four to five times more common in identical than in fraternal twins, suggesting an inherited predisposition to the disease. Unfortunately, our culture encourages anorexia nervosa.
A typical case involves a young woman from a middle-class family who values appearance more than self-worth and self-actualization. Typically, family ties are strong and the patient is efficient, eager to please her parents, and somewhat of a perfectionist. An absentee or distant father is also common. The characteristic behavior of anorexia is obsessive and compulsive, resembling addiction. Patients may become obsessed with the idea that they are, or will become, fat. They may fear the transition from girlhood to womanhood resulting in a more curvaceous figure, and become determined to stave it off by controlling their weight. This starvation approach is then carried to the extreme of undernourishment until total adolescent body weight is dangerously low. Even at that extreme, patients may still feel fat and continue to starve themselves, sometimes literally to death.
