SPECIAL DIETS FOR WEIGHT LOSS: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL DIET PLAN

This 10-point plan is nothing more than sound nutrition and exercise advice, and it should be followed throughout life. Although you can always find a diet book on the best-seller list, the fact remains that most diets fail, and most individuals who lose weight return to their overweight or overfat condition within a very short time. A lifetime plan for proper eating and exercise offers you the best chance for success and safety.
1. Consume a minimum of 1,200 calories daily.
2. Drink a minimum of 10 glasses of water daily when you diet.
3. Eat sufficient protein daily. Consult the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) table in chapter 10 to determine your exact needs.
4. Eat at least 50 to 100 g (200 to 400 kcal) of carbohydrate and 10 g of fat (90 cal) daily to spare protein. Unless your carbohydrate and fat intake are sufficient to meet your daily needs, some dietary protein and lean protein mass (muscle) will be converted to glucose to nourish the nervous system. Failing to spare protein for months at a time is not recommended. Fat is also very important for satiety.
5. Never skip a meal, even if you are not hungry. Choose a variety of foods from the nutrition pyramid in chapter 10.
6. Gear your program to a weight loss of between one and two pounds weekly and stay with it until you reach your goal.
7. Premeasure each food portion, keep records of your food and drink intake, identify problem areas, and take steps to change.
8. Avoid laxatives, stimulants, and diuretics, and use a multiple vitamin and mineral daily.
9. Combine dieting with exercise in one aerobic and one strength training activity or aerobic program you enjoy; exercise a minimum of three times weekly, for at least 30 minutes each time.
10. Plan to stay with your new eating and exercise routine for a minimum of 12 months.
