HOW TO PREVENT CORONARY HEART DISEASE: HOW THE HEART FUNCTIONS, CORONARY HEART DISEASE & FAT AND CHOLESTEROL IN BRIEF
How the Heart Functions
The heart's main purpose is to pump blood containing oxygen and nutrients to parts of the body. In addition, the heart receives blood containing waste products (such as carbon dioxide) for elimination. It is through the circulatory system and its blood vessels that the heart pumps and receives blood.
Coronary arteries can become occluded by blood fats and other substances that accumulate on their inside walls. When this collection of substances breaks loose and travels to another part of the body, it is called a thrombosis. The clogging material itself is called plaque, and the blockage of the coronary arteries is known as atherosclerosis.
Coronary Heart Disease
If the blood vessels to the heart become obstructed or if they rupture, thereby interfering with the passage of oxygenated blood, the part of the body deprived of blood may die. If it is the arteries supplying the heart (coronary arteries) that become obstructed, a part of the heart may die. This is what happens when a heart attack occurs.
Fat and Cholesterol
When foods are eaten that are high in saturated fats, the liver is stimulated to manufacture cholesterol. Cholesterol, along with the blood protein triglycerides, form lipoproteins. It is the cholesterol from foods, added to the cholesterol the body normally produces, that can become excessive and result in occlusion of the coronary arteries.
