PREVENTING HEART DISEASE: HOW THE HEART FUNCTIONS

One of the authors of this book recently moved into a new house—one that was just built—and has experienced a most frustrating situation. Every few weeks the faucets have to be dismantled to clean out the debris. The builder says this is to be expected in a new house, that it is the lead and material from inside the pipes that accumulates and clogs the faucets. The fact remains that every few weeks the screen in the faucets gets clogged and has to be taken out and cleaned.
The situation with the faucets is analogous to that of the body's fluid system, which includes the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels. As the faucets carry water to where it is needed, so do the blood vessels carry blood to where it is needed. As the pumping station somewhere in town pumps the water, so does the heart pump the blood. And as pipes can become clogged with debris, so can your blood vessels.
The heart's main function is to pump blood containing oxygen and nutrients to parts of the body. It also receives blood filled with waste products (such as carbon dioxide) that are to be eliminated from the body. The heart pumps this blood through the circulatory system and into and from the lungs via blood vessels. If these blood vessels become obstructed or if they rupture thereby interfering with the passage of oxygenated blood, the part of the body deprived of blood can die. And if it is the heart's blood supply that is blocked, it too can die. That is what happens when a heart attack occurs. The arteries supplying the heart are called the coronary arteries, any problem with them is referred to as either coronary heart disease (CHD) or coronary artery disease.
