Fact
1. In both children and adults, studies show that the major cause of heaviness is inactivity followed by overeating. The major problem for the majority of overfat people in the United States is inactivity. A regular exercise program is still the best health insurance policy and the best approach to weight and fat loss.
2. This is not true. Do not restrict your water intake in any way. Water is essential to the proper function of every body system. Fluid retention is common while dieting since water remains in the spaces freed by the disappearance of fat. This fluid generally remains for two to three weeks and often obscures actual weight loss. Drink water freely at all times, particularly when you are restricting your calories. The majority (about 80 percent) of excess weight is fat, not water.
3. Alcohol in any form is high in calories (7 cal per g, 150 cal per beer, mixed drink, or 4-oz glass of wine). Since alcohol is a depressant, it encourages relaxation, and relaxation improves appetite. In addition, high-calorie snack foods and alcohol seem to go together.
4. Very small amounts, such as one or two squares of a chocolate bar, one or two pieces of hard candy, or three or four ounces of soda, raise blood-sugar levels and give you the impression you are not hungry. In larger amounts, however, high blood-sugar levels rapidly fall, leaving you with little energy and hungry enough to eat several more high-calorie candy bars.
5. You should lose weight at the rate of no more than one to two pounds weekly. Very low calorie diets that produce rapid weight loss have a number of pitfalls: (1) They are dangerous; possibly life-threatening. (2) Rapid weight loss is usually followed by rapid weight gain. (3) Your percentage of body fat increases each time you lose and reacquire the weight. 6. From a medical point of view, there is no such thing as cellulite as a particular form of fat. The lumpy, dimplelike deposits called cellulite tend to be most visible in women and often appear on the thighs, backs of legs, and buttocks. These deposits are merely large fat cells that show through the somewhat thinner skin of women. Thicker-skinned males tend not to develop this appearance unless they become extremely fat. Prevention is easier than treatment and focuses on proper nutrition, maintaining normal weight and fat, and avoiding rapid weight-loss attempts or yo-yo dieting.
7. This is partially correct. It is better to stay somewhat fat than to lose, then regain, body weight rapidly. If you lose weight and fat slowly through a combination of diet and exercise and lose only 10 to 15 lb, skin wrinkling is unlikely. It is also helpful to include weight training as part of your exercise routine. As your fat cells shrink, the added muscle mass will help your skin fit you better in some areas, such as the back of the arm. If you have more than 15 lb to lose, work with your physician on a 6- to 12-month program.
8.It requires reduced calories, regular exercise, and abdominal exercises to flatten your stomach. With calorie restriction, the fat cells in the stomach will shrink, and your stomach will get smaller. Your sit-up routine (see chapter 9) will strengthen the underlying muscle tissue. Both adipose and muscle tissue need changing; you cannot convert fatty tissue to muscle tissue, nor will muscle tissue change to fat when you become sedentary.
9.The use of laxatives causes gastrointestinal trouble and can result in dehydration and undernourishment. It is better to be fat than to endanger your health. It is impossible to defecate away unwanted pounds safely.
10.The use of drugs and drug combinations to depress appetite is dangerous and sometimes fatal. Drug usage is an attempt to cause weight loss by increasing metabolic rate, curbing the appetite, or causing fluid loss. Amphetamines and diuretics are the two most commonly used diet pills. Amphetamines toy with the thyroid gland, cause nervousness, speed up metabolism, and require increasingly stronger dosages as tolerance develops; diuretics result in rapid fluid loss. Both are dangerous, ineffective approaches to weight loss.
11.Each of these popular gimmick approaches to weight loss results in little calorie burning and is totally ineffective. To lose weight and fat, you must engage in exercise that burns a high number of calories, such as aerobics. You then enter a negative calorie balance and lose weight and fat.
