Generic Accutane (Isotretinoin, Accutane® equivalent)

Isotretinoin is a form of vitamin A. It decreases the amount of sebum (oil) that is released by the sebaceous (oil) glands, and it increases that rate at which the skin renews itself. Isotretinoin is used to treat severe nodular acne that has not responded to other treatments, including antibiotics.

Drug Medical Information

UNDERWEIGHT CONDITIONS AND EATING DISORDERS: EATING DISORDERS - AMENORRHEA

Young female anorexics generally develop amenorrhea. Females must reacquire 17 to 22 percent body fat before the menstrual cycle resumes. Young male anorexics lose their sex drive and become impotent. Thyroid hormone secretions, adrenal secretions, growth hormones, and blood pressure-regulating hormones reach abnormal levels. The heart pumps less efficiently as cardiac muscle weakens; the chambers diminish in size, and blood pressure falls. Heart rhythm disturbances and sudden stopping of the heart may occur due to lean-tissue loss and mineral deficiencies, producing sudden death in some patients. Other health problems include anemia, gastrointestinal problems, atrophy of the digestive tract, abnormal function of the pancreas, blood-lipid changes, dry skin, decreased core temperature, and disturbed sleep.
Early treatment is essential to avoid permanent damage. Without treatment, about 10 percent of the patients die of starvation. Forced feeding may temporarily improve health, but the condition can reappear unless proper psychological and medical therapy is initiated and is then successful. Treatment is directed at restoring adequate nutrition, avoiding medical complications, and altering the psychological and environmental patterns that have supported or permitted the emergence of anorexia. About 5 percent of those in treatment eventually reach 25 percent of their desired weight, and 50 to 75 percent resume normal menstrual cycles. After treatment ends, about 66 percent fail to eat normally and 7 percent die (of which 1 percent commit suicide).
